On the last day of August in 1941, Russian poet, Marina Tsvetaeva committed suicide in a little town named, Yalbuga. Up to then, it seemed everything she did led her to this town, to this special room, and to this special hook on the ceiling from where she hung her rope.

Marina’s final act was not one of surrender, it was not one of failure, or even not an act of a desperate woman left alone. Her suicide was her final manifestation of freedom, not only as a human being, but first and foremost as a poet.

Being a poet was, for Marina Tsvetaeva, a special state of mind in her existence. Thriving towards purity of expression, in a world that was often lewd and base.  Where she was often on the other side of hatred, hunger, and cowardice and yet, she never became bitter. Yes, she was angry. Yes, she deserved better. Yes, she is poetry incarnated! But, the fusion of intellect and emotion in her creations made her first and foremost a true human being.

In our play, we meet Marina a couple hours before her death. She is coming to terms with her life, with her loved ones, with her ideas. Through her story a whole era comes to life. This era extends from the long Russian winter, from the beginning of the 20th century, until the heydays of the Stalinist era. It is a heartbreaking confession to the ears of her true lover, the prince of poets, Rainer Maria Rilke, to whom she wrote so many love letters, and never met in her life.

THIS PLAY WILL BE AN ELEGY FOR A POETESS AND A HYMN FOR POETRY.
